Quectel Wireless Solutions has announced an LGA version of its RG660Qx 5G communications module, designed to facilitate the shift from legacy GSM-R to the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS). The hardware and a companion evaluation kit are intended for device-level interoperability testing.

Why it matters

As the rail industry modernizes its communication infrastructure, this module provides the necessary technical foundation for testing advanced, high-bandwidth 5G network performance. It accelerates the transition for operators moving to FRMCS standards while ensuring backward compatibility.

The module integrates Qualcomm X85 and X82 5G Modem-RF systems and achieves Ethernet speeds up to 10 Gb/sec. It utilizes Power Class 1.5 to provide extended signal coverage and supports n100 and n101 frequency bands.

The players

Quectel Wireless Solutions

An international supplier of IoT modules and connectivity hardware specializing in cellular and satellite modem integration.

Qualcomm

A global semiconductor company that designs and supplies the 5G Modem-RF system-on-chip architectures used in the RG660Qx series.

The details

Quectel developed the module in an LGA (Land Grid Array) format—a surface-mount packaging method where connection pins are located on the bottom of the chip—to improve mechanical stability and support interoperability testing. The system includes an evaluation kit, a hardware platform that allows engineers to test device-level performance before full-scale deployment. By supporting Power Class 1.5, the hardware transmits at a higher power level than standard units to maintain connectivity over wider geographic rail areas.

The Tech Race

This release follows the industry-wide effort to move rail communications away from the aging GSM-R standard toward 5G-enabled FRMCS networks. It positions the hardware as a critical test component for vendors racing to certify devices for the next generation of global rail operations.

Rail industry engineers and device manufacturers can use this evaluation kit to begin the validation of new on-board systems and network signaling hardware. The move enables the deployment of high-speed, secure data networks that will eventually replace legacy voice-heavy rail systems.

The takeaway

The transition to FRMCS is a necessary step for modernizing train signaling and operational connectivity, moving beyond the limits of current GSM-R tech. Watch for incoming validation reports from rail industry participants as they begin testing the hardware against specific network requirements.
